Softball Recap: Unicoi County Picks Up Fifth Straight Win on the Road

Unicoi County had won five straight on the road, but on Wednesday they bumped their record up to 18-7 to make it six. They had just enough and edged out the David Crockett Pioneers 2-1. That's two games straight that the Blue Devils have won by just one run.

Lela Byrd spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Kianna Woodward was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Aaliyah Engle, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.

As for David Crockett, they moved to 22-9-1 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. Having soared to a lofty 15 runs in the game before, they couldn't push the score so high this time.

On David Crockett's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Madelyn Dulaney gave up only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up nine Ks.

At the plate, David Crockett saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lily Mango, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases.

Looking ahead, Unicoi County will challenge Cocke County at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Blue Devils 3.2, the Fighting Cocks 2.1) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for David Crockett, they will face off against Gibbs at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles will roll in looking for their 14th straight victory, something the Pioneers surely won't give up without a fight.
