Football Recap: Hunter Salinas and Emiliano Hernandez Secure Win for Nixon

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Nixon). They strolled past the South San Antonio Bobcats with points to spare on Thursday, taking the game 28-13. The team's explosion on offense also rewarded the Mustangs with their most commanding win of the season.

Nixon was led to victory by Emiliano Hernandez and Hunter Salinas. Hernandez rushed for 64 yards and a pair of scores, while Salinas threw for 134 yards and one TD. What's more, Salinas racked up 115.1 passer rating, the most he's had since back in October of 2024.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Nixon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 219 rushing yards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their rushing yard total in three consecutive games.

Nixon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of David Cedillo and Pablo De Leon. De Leon has been hot for a while, having also posted five or more total tackles the last 14 times he's played. Nixon received some extra help from Cedillo, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Nixon now has a winning record of 3-2. As for South San Antonio, their defeat dropped their record down to an identical 3-2.

Looking ahead, Nixon will venture away from home to face off against Southwest Legacy at 7:30 p.m. on October 3. The Titans' defense has only allowed 12.2 points per game this season, so the Mustangs' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for South San Antonio, they will face off against Martin at 7:30 p.m. on October 3.
