Softball Game Preview: Pearl River Rebels vs. Sumner Cowboys

The Pearl River Rebels will head out on the road to challenge the Sumner Cowboys at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

On Tuesday, Pearl River got the win against Ursuline Academy by a conclusive 16-1. The Rebels have beaten the Lions the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Lions has come to flipping the script.

Pearl River got a massive performance out of Riley Falcon, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Falcon also put up a triple, which was her first of the season. Laikyn Jeffries was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.

Pearl River was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .355 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.

Meanwhile, Sumner put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. Everything went their way against St. Scholastica as Sumner made off with an 11-1 victory. Considering the Cowboys have won four matches by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Sumner's win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-0. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.2 runs over those games. As for Pearl River, their record now sits at 3-1.

Pearl River suffered a grim 11-3 defeat to Sumner in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. Can Pearl River avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
