Basketball Game Preview: Ponte Vedra Sharks vs. Leesburg Yellow Jackets

After both having extra time off, the Ponte Vedra Sharks and the Leesburg Yellow Jackets will shake off the cobwebs and hit the court one another at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Ponte Vedra sitting on eight straight victories and Leesburg on six.

Ponte Vedra is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup last Thursday. They enjoyed a cozy 65-51 win over Leon. Given the Sharks' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 43rd, while the Lions are ranked 125th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Ponte Vedra got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was David Sanchez Barrera out in front who almost dropped a double-double with 16 points and nine assists. Sanchez Barrera's big performance that evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 16 points. Another player making a difference was Maddox Palmer, who went 6-for-7 to rack up 14 points.

Sanchez Barrera wasn't the only one working in the assist department: Ponte Vedra was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. Ponte Vedra is 19-5 when they've passed the ball that well.

Meanwhile, Leesburg didn't have too much trouble with Lecanto last Thursday as they won 61-46.

Leesburg's win came from a few key players Ponte Vedra will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Xavier Campbell, who posted 16 points. Jalen Brown was another key player, putting up 15 points.

Ponte Vedra's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 21-8. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.7 points over those games. As for Leesburg, their victory bumped their record up to 17-7.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as Ponte Vedra and Leesburg are some of the highest-scoring teams around. Ponte Vedra hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 58.9 points per game. However, it's not like Leesburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging 61.8 points.
