League recap: Stone stuns Northern in upset

Southern Maryland recap Oct. 3, 2012

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Stone, who took down 104th ranked Northern, 14-9. Kieron Morsell threw for 68 yards and ran for 74 yards in the win.

Patuxent extended the longest winning streak in Southern Maryland this week by beating La Plata, 45-7. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Panthers.

Devone Boone put up the best numbers through the air as McDonough beat Lackey. He finished with a total of six completions for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Boone's favorite target this week was James Harrell, who caught three passes for 72 yards.

Stephen Stewart was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 207 yards on 27 carries as Leonardtown bested Chopticon. Teammate Brandon Dennee added to the ground attack by rushing for 55 yards.

Bush was the best wideout in the league this week as the Raiders defeated the Braves. Bush tallied two receptions for 89 yards.

6-foot-2 quarterback Brandon Battle of North Point is the league leader in passing yards this season with 635. He has also thrown seven touchdowns. On the ground, Leonardtown's Stewart has rushed for 659 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Harrell. The McDonough star has 16 catches for 393 yards.

Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when Patuxent takes on Great Mills. Steve Crounse's team's offense has racked up 215 points this season, earning them the top spot in the league, while the Hornets have allowed only 243 on the year.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Michael Nines's team takes on Huntingtown. As it stands, the Raiders are in sixth, while the Hurricanes are in third.

The Cougars moved up to 129 from 157 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Stone was able to make the jump by beating the Patriots 14-9.
