Football Recap: Jones Comes Up Short

Jones extended their losing streak to five on Friday, dropping them down to 1-7. They had to suffer through a 55-14 loss at the hands of the La Vernia Bears. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 710th, while the Bears are ranked 202nd).

Although Jones took the loss, they still got scores from Preston Alvarado and Rudolfo Villarreal.

Jones didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Jayce Foster.

As for La Vernia, their win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.6 points over those games.

It was another big night for TY CARTER, who rushed for 249 yards and three TDs while picking up 13.8 yards per carry. Those 249 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was COOPER NULL, who rushed for 31 yards and three scores.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Jones will venture away from home to take on Bay City at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for La Vernia, they will head out to challenge Floresville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bears will be up against the Tigers/Jaguars' rather soft defense (which has allowed 33.5 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
