McCool Junction takes loss despite strong efforts from Briann Stutzman and McKenna Yates

Recap: McCool Junction Mustangs vs. St. Mary's Cardinals

It was a good run, but the McCool Junction Mustangs unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell just short of St. Mary by a score of 41-39. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points McCool Junction has scored all season.

McKenna Yates and Briann Stutzman certainly did their best on Saturday to try and avoid the loss. Yates scored 15 points along with five steals, while Stutzman scored 16 points. Stutzman continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played.

McCool Junction struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as St. Mary's racked up ten assists.

Mya Hedstrom was her usual excellent self, scoring 27 points along with eight rebounds and eight steals for St. Mary's. Hedstrom is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Lorissa Reiman, who scored four points along with six rebounds.

McCool Junction's defeat dropped their record down to 8-3. As for St. Mary's, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-2.

McCool Junction will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Bruning-Davenport/Shickley at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Bruning-Davenport/Shickley will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Nebraska Rankings (they are ranked 211th, while McCool Junction is ranked 54th). As for St. Mary's, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Santee.
