Football Recap: Grapevine Mustangs vs. Burleson Elks
Grapevine extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping them down to 1-5. They came up short against the Burleson Elks, falling 36-12. The Mustangs were not able to make up for their loss to the Elks from their previous meeting back in October of 2024.
When it comes to explaining why Grapevine lost, don't look at Jailen Holmes. Despite the final result, he threw for 100 yards and one touchdown, and also punched in one score on the ground.
As for Burleson, their win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 3-2. The result was nothing new for the Elks, who have now won three games by 24 points or more so far this season.
A big part of Burleson's victory came down to the chemistry between Andrew Sparks and his top target Ashtyn Johnson. Sparks threw for 217 yards and three TDs on only 16 passes while Johnson picked up 166 receiving yards and three scores. Nathan Jackson handled things on the ground, rushing for 94 yards.
Coincidentally, Grapevine and Burleson will both be playing The Colony the next time they take the field. The Elks will host the Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, while the Mustangs will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th.
