League recap: Durango surprises Grand Junction

Durango scored a shocking upset when it eliminated Grand Junction, 34-33. At the time, the Tigers were ranked 12th in the state, while the Demons were 27th.

Durango was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after defeating Grand Junction. David Vogt's team came in at 14 in the state poll after placing at number 27 last week.

Robbie Owens' team's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. TYLER HEINSMA threw for 235 and 1 touchdown and JACK PARSONS had 72 yards receiving. On the ground HEINSMA contributed 155 yards. THERON VERNA helped Grand Junction's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 78 yards.

HEINSMA put up the best numbers through the air as the Tigers fell to the Demons. HEINSMA's favorite target this week was PARSONS, who caught 2 passes for 72 yards.

Grand Junction's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Tigers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. HEINSMA has thrown for 1,105 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, while VERNA has 23 catches for 386 yards.

In 133 carries AUSTIN LEWIS has put up 987 yards this year.

A big matchup in 4A/5A Southwest this week will be when Montrose takes on Fruita Monument. At the moment, the Indians are in first, while the Wildcats are in fourth.

Grand Junction Central lost to Fruita Monument 47-14 last week, the largest margin of any game.
