Basketball Recap: Boerne-Champion Comes Up Short

Boerne-Champion was the 51-38 winner over Smithson Valley when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Boerne-Champion Chargers took a 78-70 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Smithson Valley Rangers on Friday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Chargers came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 103rd, while the Rangers are ranked 262nd).

When it comes to explaining why Boerne-Champion lost, don't look at Gavin Peck. Despite the final result, he went 9 of 14 from beyond the arc en route to 33 points. The dominant performance gave Peck a new career-high in points. Baeden Burdick was another key player, putting up ten points.

Smithson Valley's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Wyatt Clemence, who went 9 for 14 on his way to 24 points and five boards. Another player making a difference was Wayne Jurica, who went 6 of 9 from beyond the arc en route to 22 points and six rebounds.

Boerne-Champion's defeat dropped their record down to 21-6. As for Smithson Valley, the victory got them back to even at 9-9.

Coincidentally, both will both be playing Alamo Heights the next time they take the court. Smithson Valley will head out to face Alamo Heights at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Boerne-Champion will host them at 6:30 p.m. on January 17th.
