Basketball Recap: Wausau East's Loss Ends Three-Game Winning Streak at Home

It was a classic East v. West duel when Wausau East challenged Wausau West on Friday. The Wausau East Lumberjacks took a 63-57 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wausau West Warriors. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Lumberjacks came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Wisconsin basketball rankings (they are ranked 26th, while the Warriors are ranked 91st).

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Wausau West to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kargie Cooper, who went 9 of 16 on his way to 16 points along with eight boards and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Bennett Matteson, who went 7 of 14 en route to 17 points.

Wausau East's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-2. As for Wausau West, their victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-3.

Wausau East will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Northland Pines at 7:15 p.m. on January 21st. As for Wausau West, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 50-29 loss against Marshfield on the 14th.
