Softball Game Preview: Leopold Wildcats vs. Malden Green Wave

The Leopold Wildcats will head out to face off against the Malden Green Wave at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

Leopold is leaving town to face Malden after disappointing their home crowd in their season opener. Leopold came up short against Bernie on Friday, falling 11-2.

Piper Lincoln spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and seven unearned) runs on six hits and racked up nine Ks.

On the hitting side, Malia VanderMierden made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Ava Jansen was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Malden put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 7-6 W against Clearwater.

Malden also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Alyssa Broom gave up six earned runs on 12 hits and racked up nine Ks. Broom has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Mariah Loya was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Lexi Malone, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Malden was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .432 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.

Leopold suffered a grim 18-11 defeat to Malden when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can Leopold avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
