Softball Game Preview: East Mecklenburg Eagles vs. Sun Valley Spartans

The East Mecklenburg Eagles will head out on the road to challenge the Sun Valley Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. East Mecklenburg is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.

On Friday, East Mecklenburg needed a bit of extra time to put away Butler. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 win over the Bulldogs.

Geneva Garvais made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 17 batters over eight innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one triple.

In other batting news, Zya Dunlap was excellent, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. Jahslyn Pruitt was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Sun Valley didn't have quite enough to beat Cuthbertson on Friday and fell 7-6. The loss continues a trend for the Spartans in their meetings with the Cavaliers: they've now lost five in a row.

Mariah Garcia (2026) was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring three runs and stealing four bases while going 3-for-4.

East Mecklenburg's record now sits at 10-8. As for Sun Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-7.

Sun Valley's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. East Mecklenburg has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Sun Valley, though, as they've been averaging only 2.2 strikeouts. Will East Mecklenburg keep running through batters, or will the Spartans buck the trend?

East Mecklenburg couldn't quite get it done against Sun Valley in their previous meeting on Monday as they fell 8-3. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
