Basketball Recap: Calhan Falls Short of Merino in the Playoffs

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Calhan can now relate to. They were beaten by the Merino Rams 74-24 on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 142nd, while the Rams are ranked 15th).

Kailey Peterson was Calhan's leading scorer, having posted six points. Peterson also led the team in rebounds with four.

Merino's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kya Piel, who almost dropped a double-double with 15 points and nine assists. Piel is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last 21 games she's played. Brooklyn Sutter was another key player, shooting 60% from the field on her way to 12 points along with seven rebounds and six assists.

Calhan's loss dropped their record down to 15-10. As for Merino, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 23-1.

Calhan does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Merino, they have already played their next match, a 49-20 win against Sargent on the 13th.
