Basketball Recap: Hastings Takes a Loss

On Friday, the Hastings Tigers opened the new year with a less-than-successful 62-53 defeat to the Gretna East Griffins.

It was another big night for Talan Hovie, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 18 points in addition to seven rebounds and seven steals for Gretna East. The dominant performance gave Hovie a new career-high in steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Drayke Brown, who posted eight points.

Hastings has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-5 record this season. As for Gretna East, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hastings will venture away from home to challenge Adams Central at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Gretna East, they will head out to take on Lincoln Northwest at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gretna East has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 199 points over their last three games.
