Westerly and Prout are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2017, but likely not for long. The Bulldogs will host the Crusaders at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Westerly is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
Westerly is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Smithfield, who was ranked seventh at the time (Westerly was ranked sixth). The Bulldogs came up short against the Sentinels on Thursday, falling 7-1. The contest marked the Bulldogs' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.
Dacia Gingerella made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one double. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Ella Keegan, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Prout posted their closest victory since May 21, 2024 on Friday. They won by a run and slipped past St. Raphael Academy 6-5. The win continues a trend for the Crusaders in their matchups with the Saints: they've now won four in a row.
Emma Manzo was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in May of 2024.
Westerly dropped their record down to 5-5 with the defeat, which was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 2.4 runs. As for Prout, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Westerly hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. However, it's not like Prout struggles in that department as they've averaged .328. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Westerly was able to grind out a solid victory over Prout in their previous matchup back in May of 2022, winning 6-1. Will the Bulldogs repeat their success, or do the Crusaders have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
