Basketball Game Preview: Washburn Pirates vs. Cosby Eagles

Washburn and Cosby are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2022, but not for long. The Washburn Pirates will square off against the Cosby Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.

Last Friday, everything went Washburn's way against Hancock County as Washburn made off with a 53-28 victory. The Pirates have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 contests by 23 points or more this season.

Ebany Hill had an outrageously good game as she went 6-for-11 from beyond the arc en route to 26 points and five steals. Washburn is 15-2 when Hill posts three or more steals, but 4-7 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylie Proffitt, who posted ten points along with seven steals and five assists.

Meanwhile, Cosby entered their tilt with Hancock County on Tuesday with six consecutive wins , and they'll enter their next game with seven. They breezed past the Indians to the tune of 49-17. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 149th, while the Indians are ranked 392nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Cosby's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-10. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.4 points over those games. As for Washburn, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-9 record this season.

Things could have been worse for Washburn, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 55-40 loss to Cosby when the teams last played back in January. Can Washburn avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
