Baseball Recap: Sandia Prep Gets the Win

Sandia Prep hadn't beaten Ruidoso on the road since May 13, 2023 but that history sure didn't bother them on Saturday. The Sundevils narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Warriors 18-17. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Sundevils have posted since April 8th.

Logan Lemons and Ethan Dudley were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Lemons tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Dudley pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Sandia Prep is 4-2 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 6-9 otherwise. At bat, Lemons went 3-for-5 with two runs, one double, and one RBI, while Dudley went 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Landon Hardcastle, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Sandia Prep: the team is 7-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-10 otherwise. Nate Bowen also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Sandia Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .513. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Sandia Prep has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-11 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.5 runs over those games. As for Ruidoso, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-13-1.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sandia Prep will head out to square off against East Mountain at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Sundevils' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Timberwolves have averaged an impressive 9 runs per game this season. As for Ruidoso, they will venture away from home to take on Dexter at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Demons have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13 runs per game on average), something the Warriors will no doubt try to take advantage of.
