Basketball Recap: Eyal Amsalem's Big Game Can't Quite Lead La Jolla over Mira Mesa

La Jolla lost against Mira Mesa back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The La Jolla Vikings fell 60-51 to the Mira Mesa Marauders. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 421st, while the Marauders are ranked 140th).

La Jolla's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Eyal Amsalem, who went 6 of 11 en route to 14 points. The dominant performance also gave Amsalem a new career-high in assists (four). Brody Sessa was another key player, going 8 for 18 on his way to 20 points.

La Jolla has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 16-8 record this season. As for Mira Mesa, they have been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine contests, which somehow still isn't as good as their 20-4 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. La Jolla will challenge Mission Bay at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mission Bay knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three games -- so hopefully La Jolla likes a good challenge. Mira Mesa has already played their next matchup (against Coronado), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
