Softball Game Preview: Marist Spartans vs. Cottage Grove Lions

For the second straight game, Marist will face off against Cottage Grove. The Spartans will welcome the Lions at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Marist's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last four matches.

12 must be Marist's lucky number: they beat Cottage Grove with that score not once but twice on Tuesday. The Spartans beat the Lions by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 12-2. Considering the Spartans have won five games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Arabella Martinez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Lera Basom and Tizita Martin did most of the damage at the plate: Basom went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run, while Martin went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs. Those two doubles gave Basom a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Finley Schweigert, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.

This is the second loss in a row for Cottage Grove and nudges their season record down to 7-7. As for Marist, they now have a winning record of 8-7.
