Football Recap: Coppell Starts Season with Win on the Road

Coppell had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top against the Sachse Mustangs by a score of 28-20. Given the Cowboys' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 36th, while the Mustangs are ranked 167th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Coppell found their leader in sophomore Carter Zingelmann, who rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns on only 12 carries, and also threw for 198 yards while completing 84.2% of his passes.

Coppell didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Sachse to a completion percentage of just 41.2%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from three players: Lincoln Gardner, Tyrell Roberson, and Isaiah Witherspoon, who each logged one passes deflected. Given Zingelmann's standout performance, it's clear Sachse's secondary just wasn't on the same level.

Coppell's defense didn't let Dirk Williams Jr.., get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as four different players picked up one apiece. Another thorn in Sachse's side was Gardner, who picked up a sack, made ten total tackles, and defended one pass.

Loss or not, Sachse got some senior leadership from Williams Jr. and Roderick Rainwater. Williams Jr. rushed for 109 yards on only 12 carries, while Rainwater rushed for 108 yards.

Coppell will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Bowie at 7:00 p.m. on the 12th. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 1,013 yards in their previous games. As for Sachse, they wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 24-21 win against Lamar on the 4th.
