The Pymatuning Valley Lakers will venture away from home to face off against the St. John Fighting Herald at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Pymatuning Valley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10 runs per game this season.
Pymatuning Valley is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Jefferson Area just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Tuesday. They came up short against the Falcons, falling 10-4.
Pymatuning Valley saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was CJ Karbacka, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one run.
Meanwhile, St. John had just enough and edged out Kirtland 10-8 on Wednesday. That's two games straight that the Fighting Herald have won by exactly two runs.
The team relied heavily on Dyln Newsome, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. Will Anderson was another key player, going 2-for-5 with three runs and two doubles.
St. John kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Kirtland only managed eight hits.
The win made it two in a row for St. John and bumps their season record up to 14-4. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of two runs across that stretch. As for Pymatuning Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-4.
Thursday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Pymatuning Valley has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .463. However, it's not like St. John struggles in that department as they've averaged .530. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Pymatuning Valley came up short against St. John when the teams last played back in April of 2024, falling 11-6. Can the Lakers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
