Preview: Myers Park Mustangs vs. Berry Cardinal
Myers Park has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will square off against The Berry Cardinal at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Myers Park has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 125 points over their last three matches.
Last Friday, Myers Park got themselves on the board against Olympic, but Olympic never followed suit. They blew past the Trojans 49-0 at home. Given Myers Park's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 27th, while Olympic is ranked 189th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Myers Park's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Wendell Thompson, who threw for 150 yards and three touchdowns, and RJ Alexander, who rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries. Alexander was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 61 yards.
Meanwhile, Berry's recent rough patch got a bit rougher back in September after their fifth straight loss. They were dealt a 45-0 loss at the hands of Ardrey Kell. Despite 68 more yards than Ardrey Kell, Berry couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
Myers Park's win was their fourth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 5-3. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 38.0 points per game. As for Berry, their loss dropped their record down to 2-5.
Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant signal callers against one another: Thompson and Tanner Bushee. Thompson has put up some stellar numbers this year, and currently owns excellent season averages of 178.9 passing yards and three passing touchdowns per game this season. For his part, Bushee has averaged 124.9 passing yards and no passing touchdowns per game this season.
Everything came up roses for Myers Park against Berry in their previous matchup back in September of 2022 as the team secured a 50-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Myers Park since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
