Baseball Recap: Avondale Comes Up Short

Avondale extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 8-17 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Athens Red Hawks. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Yellowjackets of the 7-6 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

Avondale saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gibson Arthur, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. Arthur is becoming a predictor of the Yellowjackets' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 6-16 when he doesn't).

As for Athens, with the victory, they broke their six-game losing streak and moved their record to 5-11. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since May 20, 2024.

On Athens' side, Ty Manning was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. That's the most stolen bases Manning has posted since back in April. Grayson Conrad was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

Looking ahead, Avondale will head out to challenge Lutheran North at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Athens, they will be playing at home against Everest Collegiate at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
