Baseball Recap: Oakwood Comets vs. Schlarman Hilltoppers
After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Reed-Custer, Oakwood was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They skirted past the Schlarman Hilltoppers 10-8. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Oakwood also won the last time the pair played back in April of 2023.
Oakwood let Cort Vermillion and Jackson Dudley loose on the outfield. Vermillion scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances, while Dudley scored a run and stole two bases while going 4-for-6. The team also got some help courtesy of Brody Taflinger, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
On Schlarman's side, Jerrius Atkinson put in work while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. Atkinson was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBI, and two runs.
Atkinson wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Liam Billings, who scored a run while going 2-for-5.
Oakwood's victory bumped their record up to 9-13. As for Schlarman, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-7.
Oakwood will head out on the road to face off against North Vermillion at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Oakwood is facing North Vermillion at the right time seeing as North Vermillion is stuck on a nine-game losing streak. As for Schlarman, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Chrisman at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Schlarman is strutting in with some hitting muscle, as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
