For the first time this season, Southwood will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will head out on the road to square off against the Rochester Zebras at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Southwood comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
Southwood lost 11-5 to Southern Wells on Tuesday.
Southwood saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Dalton Barney, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Another was Eli Shelhamer, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.
Rochester's found some homefield redemption this week after a overtime loss to Culver Academies on Tuesday. Everything went the Zebras' way against Winamac as they made off with a 13-0 win. The result was nothing new for the Zebras, who have now won four games by eight runs or more so far this season.
Brady Coleman made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
In other batting news, Tanner Reinartz was incredible, going 1-for-2 with one home run and four RBI. Linden Wilburn was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Rochester was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Winamac only posted a batting average of .176.
Rochester pushed their record up to 9-1 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Southwood, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-5.
Southwood came up short against Rochester in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, falling 6-1. Can the Knights avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
