Gillespie has gone a perfect 6-0 against East Alton-Wood River recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Miners will look to defend their home field against the Oilers at 4:30 p.m. Gillespie's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so East Alton-Wood River's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Gillespie is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Calhoun just ended the team's six-game winning streak on Friday. They fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 1-0. The game marked the first time this season in which the Miners were not able to get on the board.
East Alton-Wood River not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since April 10th (when they won 13-3). Everything went their way against Metro-East Lutheran as they made off with an 11-3 victory. The result was nothing new for the Oilers, who have now won seven contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Ellie Beachum was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in March. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Camey Adams was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Lily Tretter was another key player, going 2-for-5 with one triple, one run, and one double.
East Alton-Wood River was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .405. They are 7-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
The win made it two in a row for East Alton-Wood River and bumps their season record up to 10-12. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. As for Gillespie, their defeat dropped their record down to 20-7.
Gillespie took their win against East Alton-Wood River when the teams last played back in March of 2022 by a conclusive 14-2 score. Do the Miners have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Oilers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
