Softball Recap: Winn's Losing Streak Snapped at Five Games

Winn came into Friday's match having lost five straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Southwest Legacy Titans 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Mavericks have posted since March 28, 2024.

Mayte Figueroa made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. She also hit a triple, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Amaddis Avila, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Alessandra Fernandez also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Winn's victory bumped their record up to 4-16. As for Southwest Legacy, they are on a nine-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-16.

Coincidentally, Winn and Southwest Legacy will both be playing McCollum the next time they take the field. The Mavericks will head out to face the Cowboys at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, while the Titans will host them at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
