Softball Game Preview: Eagle Mustangs vs. Capital Golden Eagles

Eagle is 8-2 against Capital since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Mustangs will host the Golden Eagles at 5:30 p.m. Eagle will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.

Eagle is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Idaho's top teams: Kuna, who was ranked 24th at the time (Eagle was ranked fourth). The Mustangs never let the Kavemen get on the board and left with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday. The Mustangs' pitching crew has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a run in their last three contests.

The result came thanks to Peyton Bargen's shutout, as she gave up just two hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.

Meanwhile, Capital lost 8-1 to Mountain View on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

McKenna Chavez was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run and one double.

Capital's loss dropped their record down to 12-9. As for Eagle, their win bumped their record up to 13-4.

Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Eagle hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1.9 home runs per game. However, it's not like Capital struggles in that department as they've been averaging 1.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.

Eagle took their victory against Capital in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 23-13 score. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Golden Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
