Baseball Game Preview: Kirby Cougars vs. Overton Wolverines

Kirby and Overton are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but likely not for long. Kirby will head out on the road to square off against Overton at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Overton took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Kirby, who comes in off a win.

Kirby made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Middle College, but they still couldn't quite topple them. Kirby blew past Middle College 12-5 on Monday. Surprisingly, this marked the seventh straight game that the away team has come away the victor.

Dion Blackmon was a standout: he scored three runs and stole six bases. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 2.3 stolen bases per game. Kazell Johnson also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

The home team had come away the winner the last three times Overton and White Station had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. Overton lost 22-3 to White Station on Monday.

Xavier Smith made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole three bases while going 1-for-1. The team also got some help courtesy of Julian Tallent, who scored a run and stole three bases.

Kirby's victory bumped their record up to 3-5. As for Overton, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 7-2-1.

Tuesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Kirby has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .583. However, it's not like Overton struggles in that department as they've averaged .559. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Kirby suffered a grim 12-5 defeat to Overton in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can Kirby avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
