Preview: Mira Costa Mustangs vs. Peninsula Panthers
Mira Costa is 9-0 against Peninsula since October of 2014, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Mira Costa Mustangs will head out on the road to face off against the Peninsula Panthers at 11:30 a.m. Mira Costa will be strutting in after a win while Peninsula will be coming in after a loss.
Mira Costa can finally bid farewell to their eight-game losing streak dating back to last season thanks to their game on Friday. They walked away with a 28-21 win over Santa Monica. The score was all tied up 14-14 at the break, but Mira Costa was the better team in the second half.
Mira Costa's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Mattie Miller, who rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Reese Leonard did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 111 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, Peninsula's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. They were dealt a 43-7 loss at the hands of Culver City. While losing is never fun, Peninsula can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 407th, while Culver City is ranked 115th).
Finally capturing their first win of the season, Mira Costa advanced to 1-7. As for Peninsula, their loss dropped their record down to 3-5.
Everything came up roses for Mira Costa against Peninsula in their previous meeting back in October of 2022 as the team secured a 41-8 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Mira Costa since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
