Basketball Recap: Mishawaka Marian Takes a Loss

Mishawaka Marian was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were dealt a 54-26 loss at the hands of the South Bend Riley Wildcats. The Knights were down 45-19 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.

Despite the defeat, Mishawaka Marian saw an underclassman step up: freshman Kariya Byer dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 boards. Byer has been hot, having posted nine or more rebounds the last six times she's played. Elizabeth Gill also deserves some recognition as she scored her first point of the season.

South Bend Riley's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Emma Norton, who posted 11 points in addition to eight boards and five steals. South Bend Riley is 10-5 when Norton posts five or more steals, but 2-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Serenity Farmer, who went 5 of 11 on her way to 17 points.

Mishawaka Marian's loss dropped their record down to 4-15. As for South Bend Riley, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 12-9.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mishawaka Marian has already played their next game (against Oregon-Davis), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. South Bend Riley has also has no score uploaded for their next matchup, this one against Michigan City.
