Softball Recap: Springfield Comes Up Short

Springfield had lost three straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 10-5 to make it four. They fell just short of the Waterloo Vikings by a score of 4-3. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Vikings this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-3 on Monday.

Gina Romeo was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.

As for Waterloo, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since March 25, 2025.

On Waterloo's side, Jolean Hampton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits and racked up eight Ks. Hampton has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kristlyn Kehrer, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Brilyn Eddy also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Springfield will welcome McDonald at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Blue Devils' pitching crew has only allowed 0.9 runs per game this season, so the Tigers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Waterloo, they will be playing at home against Windham at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bombers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.73 runs per game on average), something the Vikings will no doubt try to take advantage of.
