Softball Recap: Calhoun City Comes Up Short

Calhoun City extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to seven on Tuesday, dropping them down to 0-5. They lost 13-3 to the Houston Hilltoppers. On the bright side, the three- run performance marked the Wildcats' highest-scoring game to date.

As for Houston, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 5-2. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three matchups by ten runs or more this season.

For Houston's part, KB Gregory made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Gregory has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That double was her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ainsley Davis, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Peysley Russell was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Coming up, Calhoun City will challenge Water Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Blue Devils have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 17 runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Houston, they will take on Caledonia at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Cavaliers' pitching crew has only allowed 0.7 runs per game this season, so the Hilltoppers' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
