Preview: Hilton Head Island Seahawks vs. May River Sharks
The Hilton Head Island Seahawks's road trip will continue as they head out to face the May River Sharks at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th. Hopefully Hilton Head Island focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 24 on Tuesday.
Hilton Head Island suffered their biggest loss since December 15, 2023 on Tuesday. Their rough 66-45 loss to Lucy Beckham might stick with them for a while. Hilton Head Island was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-13.
Amaya Wroten put forth a good effort for the losing side as she scored 16 points along with three steals. Another player making a difference was Leah Jackson, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds.
Hilton Head Island struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, May River had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Tuesday. They came out on top against Colleton County by a score of 37-26. Given May River's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 93rd, while Colleton County is ranked 206th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
May River's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Brooke Dalton, who scored 16 points along with six steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashleigh Williams, who scored seven points.
Hilton Head Island bumped their record down to 5-13 with that loss, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for May River, their victory bumped their record up to 6-1.
Friday's game is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Hilton Head Island have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 30.6 rebounds per game. It's a different story for May River, though, as they've been averaging only 23.7 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Hilton Head Island strolled past May River when the teams last played back in January of 2023 by a score of 39-22. Will Hilton Head Island repeat their success, or does May River have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
