Baseball Game Preview: Southeast Pirates vs. Newton Falls Tigers

The Southeast Pirates are taking a road trip to take on the Newton Falls Tigers at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Southeast's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Newton Falls' hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Ellet hit Southeast with a four-run third inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Pirates fell just short of the Orangemen by a score of 5-4.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Newton Falls, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over East on Friday. That 13 run margin sets a new team best for the Tigers this season.

Leland Vargo was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Powell, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI.

Newton Falls hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as East struck out ten times.

Newton Falls pushed their record up to 4-5 with the win, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average this season. As for Southeast, their loss dropped their record down to 4-4.

Southeast beat Newton Falls 6-1 when the teams last played last Wednesday. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
