The Coral Gables Cavaliers will challenge the Hialeah Thoroughbreds at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Coral Gables will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
Coral Gables took a ten-run loss the last time they faced off against Somerset Academy, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cavaliers came out on top in a nail-biter against the Panthers on Monday, sneaking past 4-3.
Julian Saveedra spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.
Meanwhile, Hialeah was not the first on the board on Monday, but they got there more often. They walked away with a 5-1 win over South Miami.
Jordan Richardo was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Richardo was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other pitching news, Jude Fernadez looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched.
Richardo wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Devin Gil, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.
Coral Gables pushed their record up to 10-11-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Hialeah, their victory bumped their record up to 6-9.
Coral Gables' speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Cavaliers have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Hialeah, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Coral Gables continue to outrun the ball?
Everything went Coral Gables' way against Hialeah in their previous matchup back in March of 2023, as Coral Gables made off with a 6-0 win. Will the Cavaliers repeat their success, or do the Thoroughbreds have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
