Softball Recap: North Rangers vs. Boardman Spartans
It was a good run, but North unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Saturday. They took a 10-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Boardman Spartans.
Taylor Bard spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and seven unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, Brynne Smith was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Lily Namestnik, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.
On Boardman's side, Victoria Strines made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits. Strines was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with a home run, two runs, and a triple.
In other batting news, Leah Habeger was excellent, scoring a run while going 1-for-3. Alex Ward was another key contributor, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.
North's defeat ended an eight-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 11-4. As for Boardman, they now have a winning record of 8-7.
North will head out on the road to take on Gilmour Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Gilmour Academy is coming into the matchup with four straight wins at home, so North will have to stop a team with plenty of momentum. Boardman will take on Austintown-Fitch at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Austintown-Fitch is strutting in with some hitting muscle, as they've averaged 10.7 runs per game this season.
