Softball Game Preview: School Without Walls Penguins vs. Washington Latin Public Charter School Lions

The School Without Walls Penguins will challenge the Washington Latin Public Charter School Lions at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. School Without Walls has given up an average of 9.7 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

School Without Walls took a 12-run loss the last time they faced off against Maret, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Penguins narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Frogs 17-15. The victory was some much needed relief for the Penguins as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Maeve Cunningham and Harper Barlow did most of the damage at the plate: Cunningham scored three runs and stole three bases while getting on base in all six of her plate appearances, while Barlow went a perfect 5-for-5 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run. The dominant performance also gave Cunningham a new career-high in RBI (three). Abigail Dowd was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing a base while getting on base in four of her six plate appearances.

School Without Walls was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Washington Latin Public Charter School fell victim to Jackson-Reed and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They came up short against the Tigers, falling 15-0. Having soared to a lofty 34 runs in the game before, the Lions' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Washington Latin Public Charter School's defeat dropped their record down to 3-2-1. As for School Without Walls, their win bumped their record up to 6-3.
