Basketball Recap: Space Coast Takes a Loss

Space Coast was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were dealt a 78-38 defeat at the hands of the Mater Lakes Academy Bears.

Despite the loss, Space Coast saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Phillayjah Carroll posted 25 points. Another player making a difference was Zanya Smith, who put up eight points.

It was another big night for Vanessa Vancott, who dropped a double-double on 35 points and 12 rebounds for Mater Lakes Academy. That makes it 13 consecutive games in which Vancott has scored at least a third of Mater Lakes Academy's points. Lorena Fernandez was another key player, going 6 of 9 from beyond the arc on her way to 20 points.

Space Coast's defeat dropped their record down to 14-8. As for Mater Lakes Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 13-7.

Space Coast will head out on the road to take on Titusville at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Kennedie Sanders and Carroll. As for Mater Lakes Academy, they will welcome Schoolhouse Prep at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mater Lakes Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 65.1 points per game this season.
