Baseball Recap: Mullen Comes Up Short

Mullen extended their losing streak to five on Saturday, dropping them down to 7-14. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 14-12 heartbreaker at the hands of the Eaglecrest Raptors. Even if the Mustangs couldn't come away with the victory, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.

Brady Hirsh stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: he went a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and two doubles. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Marsh, who went 4-for-5 with four runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.

As for Eaglecrest, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-12. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games.

On Eaglecrest's side, Caiden Van Damme and Dylan Lambert did most of the damage at the plate: Van Damme went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and three RBI, while Lambert got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Lambert is becoming a predictor of the Raptors' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-12 when he doesn't). Marcus Haynes also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Looking ahead, Mullen will be playing in front of their home fans against Cherokee Trail at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Eaglecrest, they will head out on the road to face off against Arapahoe at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Warriors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.62 runs per game on average), something the Raptors will no doubt try to take advantage of.
