Preview: Willow Spring Storm vs. Fuquay - Varina Bengals
The Willow Spring Storm will head out on the road to face off against the Fuquay - Varina Bengals at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. The pair have had a bumpy ride up to this point with three consecutive losses for Willow Spring and six for Fuquay - Varina.
Willow Spring fought the good fight in their overtime match against Apex Friendship on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Patriots by a score of 63-60. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Despite the loss, Willow Spring saw an underclassman step up: Xavion Terrell scored 21 points along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals. The match was Terrell's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Andrew Mendzef, who scored 12 points.
Meanwhile, things could have been worse for Fuquay - Varina, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 55-39 loss to Middle Creek on Tuesday.
Despite their defeat, Fuquay - Varina saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Drew Willis, who scored 10 points along with 6 rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Nathan Mathew was another key contributor, scoring 10 points.
Green Level's victory bumped their season record to 0-0 while Willow Spring's loss dropped theirs to 2-3.
Keep an eye on the arc in Friday's game: Willow Spring have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 5.8 threes per game. It's a different story for Fuquay - Varina, though, as they've been averaging only 4.5 per game. Given Willow Spring's sizeable advantage in that area, Fuquay - Varina will need to find a way to close that gap. Willow Spring didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Fuquay - Varina in their previous matchup back in January, but they still walked away with a 58-54 win.
