Baseball Preview: Manchester Squires vs. Northfield Norsemen

The Manchester Squires will be playing at home against the Northfield Norsemen at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Manchester will be looking to keep their nine-game home win streak alive.

On Monday, Manchester beat Southwood 5-2.

Evan Martynowicz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up six Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive pitching appearances.

At the plate, Gavin Martin and Ethan Hendrix did most of the damage at the plate: Martin scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3, while Hendrix scored two runs while going 3-for-4.

Meanwhile, Northfield was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They fell 6-2 to Maconaquah.

Northfield saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Caleb Dubois, who went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Manchester has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-5-1 record this season. As for Northfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-10.

Both both teams just can't seem to miss. Manchester has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. However, it's not like Northfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.1. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Manchester beat Northfield 5-1 in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Northfield's Dillion Tomlinson, who struck out eight batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits. Now that he won't be playing on Wednesday, will it be that much easier for Manchester to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
