Football Preview: Axtell Wildcats vs. Loomis Wolves
The Axtell Wildcats will look to take advantage of their home-field for the first time this season as they take on the Loomis Wolves at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Axtell is headed into their home opener looking to turn things around after opening their season on the road. They lost 60-36 to Overton on Friday. The game was up for grabs at halftime, but sadly the Wildcats struggled afterwards.
Meanwhile, Loomis took care of business in their home opener on Friday (and then some). They blew past Blue Hill 48-6 at home.
Jace Schukar was nothing short of spectacular: he rushed for 203 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 9.7 yards per carry, and also picked up 41 receiving yards. He really tore up the turf during one magnificent 71-yard run. Jaxson Sweeney was another key rusher, rushing for 77 yards and a touchdown on only five carries.
Loomis wouldn't let Blue Hill keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Loomis can thank Walter Kenney and Tyson Freeman for forcing both of them. Kenney also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing a fumble and making three total tackles.
Axtell didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Loomis in their previous meeting back in October of 2023, but they still walked away with a 28-24 win. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Loomis' Ben Trompke, who picked up 89 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Axtell still be able to contain Trompke? There's only one way to find out.
