Football Recap: South Putnam Skates Past Greencastle with Ease

South Putnam won the last time they faced Greencastle and things went their way on Friday too. The Eagles took their game with ease, bagging a 65-21 victory over the Tiger Cubs. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Eagles.

South Putnam was led to victory by Ty Benton and Drew Cline. Benton rushed for 320 yards and four scores while picking up 11.9 yards per carry, while Cline rushed for 100 yards and a pair of TDs on only eight carries. Benton's rushing production has been exceptional as that marked his sixth straight game with at least 147 rushing yards dating back to last season.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: South Putnam was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 472 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 213 rushing yards in six consecutive matches dating back to last season.

South Putnam's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB six times. In that department, Brier Cook was the leader with 2.5 sacks.

Greencastle's loss came despite strong showings from Cole Stephens and Trevin Long. Stephens threw for 206 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 76% of his passes, while Long picked up 154 receiving yards and one score. Long was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 59 yards.

South Putnam has also opened the season with a perfect 2-0 record. As for Greencastle, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

South Putnam and Greencastle will both get their first taste of in-conference action in their upcoming games. The Eagles will square off against rival Edgewood at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Greencastle is set to take on their familiar foe Frankfort at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
