Volleyball Recap: Gray Collegiate Academy Takes Down May River in a Playoff Battle

It's playoff time, and Gray Collegiate Academy had no trouble coming through when it counted. They walked away with a 3-1 win over the May River Sharks on Wednesday. The victory was nothing new for the War Eagles as they're now sitting on five straight.

While Gray Collegiate Academy might've won, it sure wasn't easy: May River scored at least 19 points in every set they played. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 28-26.

Gray Collegiate Academy was led to victory by Colby Branham and Courtney Burgess. Branham had 23 assists and six digs, while Burgess had 14 kills, 12 digs, and three aces. Burgess is crushing it when it comes to kills: she's had at least five every time she's taken the court this season. Brianna Jones also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assist of the season.

They weren't the only good servers: Gray Collegiate Academy was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 11 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least seven aces in 14 consecutive contests.

When it comes to explaining why May River lost, don't look at Emerson Skirtich. Despite the final result, she had 21 digs.

Gray Collegiate Academy's win bumped their record up to 22-4. As for May River, they moved to 26-10 with that defeat, which also ended their eight-match winning streak.

Coming up, after both having extra time off, Gray Collegiate Academy and Bishop England will shake off the cobwebs and hit the court against one another at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. May River does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
