The Tuslaw Mustangs are taking a road trip to challenge the United Golden Eagles at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Tuslaw is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Tuslaw took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They came out on top against Medina Christian Academy by a score of 7-4. While the Mustangs didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Landon Gannet was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Cam Stevens, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, United waltzed into their contest on Wednesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They had just enough and edged out the Blue Devils 3-1.
Kadin Schonauer was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Those 15 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Schonauer wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Parker Newburn, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
United pushed their record up to 9-4 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Tuslaw, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Tuslaw has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like United struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Tuslaw beat United 5-1 in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
