Baseball Recap: Twentynine Palms Sets Scoring Season-High Against Yucca Valley

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Twentynine Palms). They put the hurt on the Yucca Valley Trojans with a sharp 17-1 win on Monday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Wildcats needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.

Salvador Ortiz was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out ten over six innings pitched. Those ten strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season.

In other batting news, Keli'I ( Bubba ) Corney was a standout: he got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs. He is becoming a predictor of Twentynine Palms' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 2-6 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Mauricio Montada, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs.

Twentynine Palms always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .619. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Twentynine Palms' victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-6. As for Yucca Valley, they dropped their record down to 0-11 with the loss, which was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Twentynine Palms beat the Trojans by a score of 12-1 on Thursday.
