Softball Recap: Highland Wins Going Away Against Hammond Central

Highland's game on Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Wednesday. They blew past the Hammond Central Wolves 17-1. The Trojans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by six runs or more this season.

Alyssa Niemann made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Highland got a massive performance out of Hailey Thomas, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI Thomas has posted since back in March. Jordan Steele was another key player, going a perfect 5-for-5 with four runs, two RBI, and one double.

With the victory, Highland broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 8-5. As for Hammond Central, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-6 record this season.

Highland and Hammond Central could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings. The Trojans will challenge Lowell at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday with a big rank disadvantage (77 vs. 20). Meanwhile, Hammond Central (ranked 278th) will meet Westville (ranked 84th) at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
