Basketball Preview: Nixon-Smiley Mustangs vs. Poth Pirates
Nixon-Smiley is 1-8 against Poth since December of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs will head out on the road to challenge the Poth Pirates at 6:15 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Nixon-Smiley is headed into the contest having just posted their biggest victory since December 5th on Saturday. They blew past Woodsboro 59-37. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mustangs.

Janaelyn White was a one-woman wrecking crew for Nixon-Smiley as she went 8 for 17 on her way to 18 points and three steals. That's the most points White has posted since back in November of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashly Garcia, who posted six points in addition to seven rebounds and four steals.
Nixon-Smiley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in eight consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Poth was able to grind out a solid win over Hallettsville on Saturday, taking the game 44-32. Given the Pirates' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 413th, while the Brahmas are ranked 945th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Nixon-Smiley's victory bumped their record up to 9-14. As for Poth, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season.
